2. Origin and Objective of the Project

Background

In the early 16th century, the ‘modern’ Swedish state was founded by Gustav Vasa. It came to

unite people in Sweden, Finland and Estonia around the Central Baltic Sea for two hundred years.

The new state developed an effective administration. Thanks to meticulous recordings of taxation,

land surveying and code of land we can follow the living conditions of those times. The royal

power had political, economical and cultural ambitions inside and outside its boundaries.

People and parts of this state shared king, church and language as well as common systems such

as mail, shipping and armed forces. This led to a strong common culture, especially in the

archipelago land- and seascape in the center of the state.

This common culture came to an end with Great Northern War (1700-1721), during which the

nations around the Central Baltic suffered heavy losses in people, infrastructure and cultural

heritage. This is especially true for the small island societies in the archipelagos, where houses,

tools, furniture and art were lost through fire and pillage. Castles, churches and shipwrecks are

the only remnants of the Renaissance and Baroque epochs. The archipelago was divided between

nations.

Problem

Since the archipelagos and the islands were so thoroughly devastated, relics older than 1721 are

sparse. Our early history is mostly unexplored. This has led to a lack of a sense for the early and

common history of the archipelago – When We Were One.

Objective

To make a successful application in March, 2010, for national and Central Baltic Interreg IVA

funding of a joint Estonian, Finnish, Åland and Swedish project that addresses the possibilities

of the early history of the Central Baltic archipelagos.

Results

A three-year project focused on the early history of the archipelagos in the Central Baltic

archipelago region, that will:

a Plan, produce and mediate a flexible, regionally/locally adaptable travelling exhibition

b Develop and launch a training program for archipelago guides

c Design thematic travel programs

d Initiate events regarding the early history of the archipelagos

e Carry through seminars for cultural tourism entrepreneurs

f Support the development of a certain number of early history relics
